Forest of Bowland
This designated AONB leads you out of Lancaster across the fells and valleys towards Clitheroe, Slaidburn. In so doing you pass a variety of landscapes and viewpoints and natural features. The Jubilee tower provides views back to Lancaster, the distant hills and out towards the Fylde coast. The road also runs alongside the river and woodland, a great place for picnics. Travelling up and down hill, you arrive at Dunsop bridge (the geographic center of the UK!). No matter what time of year you visit, the countryside is a pleasure to behold. Lake District National Park
The Fenwick has an enviable position at the gateway to the Lake District National Park. England’s largest and arguably most breath-taking outdoor destination, the Lake District offers stunning lakes, mountains, valleys and towns to explore. Ambleside is a fantastic base to explore the eastern fells of the Lake District and is a 45 minute drive from the Fenwick.
Yorkshire Dales National Park
Covering 860 square miles, the Yorkshire Dales is home to the famous ‘Three Peaks’ mountains, abbeys, castles, caves, gorges and pretty market towns such as Grassington. The Fenwick sits just 10 miles from the edge of the Dales so is a great base to explore the landscape.
Settle To Carlisle Railway
The Settle–Carlisle line is a 73-mile-long main railway line, which crosses the remote, scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. The average journey time by train between Settle and Carlisle is 1 hour and 40 minutes and is a wonderful way to take in the sights of this scenic landscape. Settle is a 35 minute drive from the Fenwick.
Kirkby Lonsdale
Kirby Lonsdale is a relatively unspoilt, quaint market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Just a 10 minute walk from the town centre, spanning the River Lune to the south and east of Kirkby Lonsdale is Devil’s Bridge. This magnificent three-arched bridge, dating from around the 13th century, is now a scheduled ancient monument and a very picturesque spot to stop and take in the scenery.
Levens Hall
Leavens Hall is home to the world’s oldest topiary gardens and a 9,500-acre agricultural estate with a deer park and fishing along the River Kent. The Elizabethan house is open for tours where visitors can see the fine collections of furniture, clocks and paintings. A 25 minute drive from the Fenwick.
Gresgarth Hall Gardens
This 12-acre garden was designed by renowned designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd. It sits riverside with terraces, herb garden borders, an extensive kitchen garden, bog garden and serpentine walk. There are both modern and classical sculpture works placed throughout the gardens.
